Behind-the-Scenes Look: Baymeadows Movers Joins Forces with Chipman and OMA to Remove Legacy Equipment from AMC Theatres
Most customers walk into a movie theater focused on the movie they're about to see. They see the giant screen, comfortable seats, and maybe the smell of freshly popped popcorn. What they don't see is all the work happening behind the scenes to bring that experience to life—or what it takes when it's time to replace decades of equipment and clear the way for the future.
Not long ago, Baymeadows Movers had the chance to partner with Chipman Relocation & Logistics on a one-of-a-kind commercial moving project through our membership in the Office Moving Alliance (OMA). Together, we assisted with the removal of older projection equipment from several AMC Theatre locations. It was not your standard commercial move. It called for careful planning, specialized equipment, experienced crews, and seamless coordination between dependable relocation partners.
Moves like these are among the reasons we love what we do. No two commercial moves are ever exactly alike, and that's what makes our work engaging.
Every Commercial Move Has a Story
One of the finest elements of commercial moving is the range of work.
During one week we're moving an entire school before students return for the new year. The next we're moving physical therapy equipment to a new healthcare facility. Next we are inside a movie theater, meticulously disassembling and removing equipment that has entertained millions of people over the years.
This AMC project was especially memorable because it required removing large digital cinema projection systems, along with several pieces of historic 35mm projection equipment. Walking into the projection booths felt like stepping back in time. Some of the film projectors and reels had been part of the movie-going experience long before digital projection had become the industry standard.
For cinema lovers, it was captivating.
For our crew, it was a reflection that every piece of equipment we move has its own story.
Great Projects Start with Great Planning
Projects like this do not begin when the moving truck shows up.
Long before the first projector is unplugged, our team maps out logistics, scheduling, entry points, equipment requirements, manpower, and safety planning.
Partnering with Chipman Relocation & Logistics, we managed every phase of the project to make sure each theater could be completed efficiently and safely. One of the biggest advantages of being part of the Office Moving Alliance (OMA) is access to a nationwide network of highly experienced commercial movers who share the same commitment to professionalism and customer service. By combining Chipman's national relocation expertise with Baymeadows Movers' local knowledge and project management experience, we were able to execute the work seamlessly from start to finish.
Cinemas weren't built with equipment removal in mind.
Projection booths tend to be tucked away on upper levels with cramped corridors, tight doorways, and restricted access. Some buildings have elevators, whereas others do not. Relocating large projection systems through those spaces demands much more than simply rolling them onto a dolly and wheeling toward the truck.
Every challenge has to be anticipated before work even begins.
That's when experience makes the difference.
It's All About Far More Than Brute Strength
Many people assume moving heavy equipment is simply about raw strength.
The reality is that commercial moving hinges on planning, technique, and using the right tools for the job.
Undertakings like the AMC equipment removal require specialized dollies, rigging equipment, lift systems, protective materials, and experienced crews who know how to safely maneuver oversized equipment through confined spaces.
Each projector had to be thoughtfully disconnected, protected, moved through the building, and securely loaded for transport.
A lot of these systems are not only heavy—they're also extremely delicate. One accidental bump into a doorway or uneven transition could result in significant damage.
Communication and patience are just as important as physical strength.
Preserving the Building Is Equally Important
While our focus is on safely moving equipment, we're equally focused on preserving the customer's facility.
Commercial structures represent a major investment, and even minor repairs can become disruptive and expensive.
When a job is done, our goal is for customers to remember how smoothly everything went, not the moving process itself.
Working Together Makes the Difference
Large commercial moving projects are never a one-person job.
Every member of the crew has a clear role, and communication is essential from start to finish.
One mover may be guiding equipment through a doorway while another stabilizes the load. Someone else is watching clearances, while another crew member is preparing the next piece for transport.
When experienced crews work in sync, there's a rhythm that emerges. That's a skill that can't be taught overnight.
Observing our team work together was a clear example of what happens when seasoned movers share the same commitment to safety, communication, and customer service.
A Little Fun Along the Way
Even during demanding commercial projects, it's important to enjoy the experience.
Working inside movie theaters definitely had its perks.
Our team couldn't help slipping downstairs for some movie snacks between jobs on the project. Having spent the day behind the scenes where few people ever get to go, popcorn for some reason tasted even better.
Such moments help make long workdays memorable and remind us that while we take our work seriously, we also enjoy what we do.
Commercial Moving Goes Beyond Transportation
Most people think moving companies just load trucks and unload them somewhere else.
Commercial moving is much more than that.
Projects often involve logistics planning, inventory management, warehousing, project management, scheduling, specialized equipment handling, and coordinating multiple contractors.
Every customer has different needs.
Some businesses have to relocate hundreds of employees over a weekend.
Some need sensitive medical equipment relocated without disruption.
Some projects occur overnight to minimize downtime.
Others—like the AMC project—entail carefully extracting specialized equipment from unique environments.
Every relocation demands flexibility, foresight, and problem solving.
At Baymeadows Movers, when a customer asks, "Can you help with this?" our first thought is almost always, "Let's figure out how."
Experience Builds Confidence
For decades, Baymeadows Movers has been proudly serving Jacksonville and Northeast Florida, and we've found that smooth projects all rely on the same core principles:
Preparation.
Communication.
Professionalism.
Trust.
Our customers know we'll come ready, communicate throughout the project, respect their property, and fix problems instead of causing them.
Whether we're on the job inside schools, hospitals, office buildings, warehouses, government facilities, entertainment venues, or commercial campuses, our approach is always the same.
Protect the customer.
Protect the equipment.
Finish the work safely.
Leave the site better than we found it.
Safeguarding a Part of Movie History
Among the unexpected highlights of this project was discovering some of the original 35mm projection systems that once brought countless movies to life.
Long before streaming services and digital cinema, these machines produced memorable experiences for generations of moviegoers.
Standing beside them gave our crew a true appreciation for how much technology has evolved over the years.
It's not every morning that a moving company has the chance to help retire a small piece of entertainment history.
Personally, it truly was an experience we will never forget.
